How Many Guitar Chords Are There?

When I first started playing the guitar, I only learned 4 chords; the G chord, C chord, D chord, and Em chord. These 4 chords were what I thought to be the only 4 chords in playing the guitar, but I quickly found out that there were more. Chords are what make up playing the guitar and are probably one of the most important elements that comes with learning to play. If you learn every chord, you are honestly already 50 percent there! With that being said, how many chords are there?

The “Guitar Alphabet” that I think of is made up of LOTS of chords ranging from A to G. In my world of playing the guitar and making everything more simple, it is made up of a total of 7 main chords and their minor partners. For example, for every A chord there is an A minor chord, for every B chord there is a B minor chord, etc. So if you total that up, it ends up to be around 14 chords. Now, there are other chords, but for beginners, if you can master these 14 chords, you are well on your way to truly conquering the guitar!
